I understand the "Use Setup Cartridges" or "Use New Cartridges" error on your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-In-One Printer typically occurs when the printer does not recognize the cartridges as the initial setup cartridges or new genuine HP cartridges.

Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:


1. Check Cartridge Compatibility

  • Make sure you are using the correct cartridges for the HP OfficeJet Pro 7740. The printer usually requires HP 952, 952XL, 953, 953XL, 954, 954XL, 956XL, or HP 955 cartridges. Setup cartridges should only be used during the initial printer setup.

2. Reinsert the Cartridges

  • Turn on the printer.
  • Open the cartridge access door and wait until the carriage is idle.
  • Remove the cartridges from the printer.
  • Inspect the cartridges for any protective tape or packaging that may still be attached, and remove it if present.
  • Reinsert the cartridges into their respective slots until they click into place.
  • Close the cartridge access door and see if the error message clears.

3. Reset the Printer

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and unplug it from the wall outlet.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet and then reconnect it to the printer.
  • Turn the printer on and check if the error message persists.

4. Update Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges and the contacts inside the printer.
  • Allow the contacts to dry for a few minutes before reinserting the cartridges.

6. Try Different Cartridges

  • If you have another set of new genuine HP cartridges, try installing them to see if the error clears. Sometimes, the error may be due to a faulty cartridge.
